What salt air does to an installation

Everything outdoors ages faster within a mile or so of the water. It is the single biggest difference between wiring a house in Mudeford and wiring the same house in Wimborne.

  • Meter boxes go first. The plastic turns chalky and cracks, the door stops shutting, and then the seal has gone and it takes weather every day.
  • Outdoor sockets seize up. The flap corrodes open, water sits in the back box, and the RCD starts tripping for no reason anybody can find indoors.
  • Screws and glands go before the fitting does. A perfectly good outside light comes off in your hand because the fixings gave up years before it did.
  • Earth connections corrode. This is the one that matters. It is invisible, it fails quietly, and it is exactly what a safety check is for.

So we spec differently here. Marine-grade or the right IP-rated kit outside, stainless fixings, glands the right way up, and the meter box seal checked as a matter of course rather than as a surprise. It costs a little more once instead of the same job twice.

Christchurch housing, and what each type needs

The town runs older than most of the coast, and it splits fairly cleanly:

  • Around the Priory, Castle Street and Purewell - Victorian and Edwardian houses. Sockets in the skirting, and often one modernisation in the 70s that is now due again.
  • Mudeford, Friars Cliff and Highcliffe - post-war houses and bungalows, closest to the water and taking the worst of the salt. This is where the outdoor work above earns its keep.
